Community Summit Day

Ah, the bittersweet end of WordCamp San Francisco’s main conference… We hope you all had a wonderful time, and have safe travels home. For those community leaders who are signed up for the community summit day today (Monday), we’re excited to talk today about the subjects that hove been cropping up in the summit forums, and to hear your feedback on the event as well as some of the exciting announcements Matt made in his State of the Word talk yesterday.

Sunday Contributor Track

Were you wondering how people got the cute little icon buttons they were wearing on their lanyards yesterday? They contributed their time and energy to WordPress, and so can you!

Today in the downstairs room, all the different contributor teams from the WordPress open source project will be working on various projects, and they would love to get you involved. Each table will have a sign indicating which team is working there, so just head over and introduce yourself, and they’ll put you to work. Not sure what each team does? Stop by the Get Involved table near the Happiness Bar, and you can get more information.

To help the people who like things a little more formal, most of the teams will do a formal introduction to the work they do in the classroom area we’ll have partitioned off in the back part of the room. Here are the approximate times for those introductions — with open source volunteering, it’s a good idea to expect a little flexibility when it comes to timing. 🙂

Travel Assistance Program

This year we’re hoping to have the best WordCamp San Francisco to date, and to make that happen we want to encourage a diverse audience and participant pool. We know San Francisco is an expensive city, and for people who have to foot the bill themselves to attend because they don’t work for a WordPress-based company it can be a lot. In addition, people who don’t live in the US have higher travel costs that can make it even harder in this situation.

We’re introducing a travel assistance program to help defray the costs of the trip for folks in these situations, especially contributors to the WordPress open source project and educators who are teaching WordPress. This travel assistance will vary in amount based on need and situation. We’re taking applications between now and June 30, so if you would need financial assistance to cover the travel costs of attending, apply now. We will email with decisions the first week of July so that you’ll have plenty of time to make early reservations even if you don’t get a travel award.

Read over the goals/guidelines for the travel assistance program and apply by June 30 if you think you would be a good candidate.

Community Days

As mentioned in the Schedule + Format post, this year we’re rolling a couple of community events into the overall plan in addition to the traditional conference.

Monday, October 27 will be the Community Summit day. This event is aimed at active contributors to the WordPress open source project and leading community professionals, and uses an unconference discussion format to get the people heavily involved in the project talking about the issues that matter most. If you think you’ll be interested in this event, you’re in luck, because we have a whole page filled with Community Summit details!

Tuesday and Wednesday, October 28-29 will be meetup days for WordPress.org contributor teams. The organization for this chunk of the WCSF week will mostly happen within the contributor teams themselves, but we have a Contributor Team Meetups page  with general information as well.

We’ll update both pages with more information as it becomes available.
