Core Background Updates: Next Steps

At the 2012 summit a big room was dedicated to pulling our collective hair out over how we could ever possibly do automatic updates. They shipped less than a year later in WordPress 3.7. Our challenges are only getting harder, but if we set our mind to them, they can get accomplished. What’s next for them? How do we get there?
