Akismet is a great solution for comment spam but user registration spam is just as big of a problem (possibly more for certain setups) in my opinion it would be good to get some great thinkers putting their heads together to try to tackle this problem.
I think getting off the million year old standalone bbPress and onto the current version would be higher priority than writing new antispam software.
