Program Posted!

Programs for Friday, Saturday, and Sunday at Mission Bay have been posted! Each day the doors open at 8am, sessions start at 9am, lunch happens mid-day, sessions wrap up between 5:30-6pm, and then anyone who wants to keep the party going can head over to happy hour at a couple of neighborhood places that are extending happy hour specials for us.

The usual caveats apply: the schedule is subject to change without notice if something unexpected happens, and we reserve the right to run a little late (especially on Sunday when Matt in speaking, heh).

Sold Out!

Holy peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, Batman: we are sold out with over 1,000 tickets sold! Biggest. WordCamp. Evar.

Here’s where things stand:

The First-Time User Workshop on Friday at Pier 38 is completely sold out. We are looking into the possibility of repeating it on Saturday to allow for additional students, but aren’t sure yet if we have the staff to pull it off. If you would like to get on the waitlist, leave a comment on the post about it.

Friday, Saturday, and Sunday at Mission Bay are also sold out for advance registration. The only way to get advance tickets now is to come on as an event sponsor, a WP-based business with a table in the mini trade show, or a microsponsor*.

We will sell Mission Bay walk-in tickets for $30/day or $65/3-day pass (Mission Bay only — 3-day passes do not include the newbie workshop) until we hit call-the-fire-marshal-because-we’re-so-over-capacity status (i.e., getting in as a walk-in is not guaranteed). These tickets will not come with a t-shirt on site unless we have some left in your size after 3pm on Sunday. Otherwise, we will mail you a shirt (we need to print more).

Livestream!

We are trying to set up a paid livestream. This will allow live access to sessions, including a chat room for asking questions during Q&A periods. Livestream ticket purchasers will be mailed a t-shirt.

Already have a ticket, but changing plans?

We are not able to provide refunds for purchased tickets. If you bought a ticket and decide not to attend, you can either keep your ticket and use it to access the livestream or consider it a donation to the cause, or you can give your ticket to a friend.

Get Ready

This week, this blog is going to see some serious action as speakers post about their sessions, schedule information goes up, and other bits and bobs are revealed. Make sure you’ve added us to your reader, or follow @WordCampSF on Twitter.

WordPress-based Businesses: Join Us!

Good News: There’s a new way for your wp-based business to get exposure at WCSF!

A table in the mini trade show is a benefit that is included with all sponsorship levels of $10,000 or above. We recognize, however, that some of the most exciting WordPress-based businesses are small startups that can’t afford expensive sponsorships. To make it possible for some of these smaller — but just as impressive — businesses to showcase their services, we are introducing another avenue for participation.

We have set aside up to 10 spaces for WordPress-specific businesses to join the trade show. These tables will be available for $2500. Note that these are not sponsorships, so they do not come with logos on the website, program, screensavers, etc. This is for inclusion in the mini trade show only; if you are interested in additional exposure benefits, please contact our sponsorship coordinator.

Because these tables are less expensive than sponsorships but offer amazing exposure to the 800+ (so far) attendees of WordCamp SF, we expect that more than ten businesses will be interested in taking one of these spots. We will take applications for these table spots and will select participating businesses based on a combination of various criteria. After vetting for eligibility* we’ll choose participating companies based on the following:

  • Expected attendee interest. Will people recognize your company or product name? Attendees will want to meet the people behind their favorite WP-based brands.
  • Community involvement. Does your company contribute to core? Sponsor WordCamps or WordPress meetups? Give away plugins or themes in the WordPress.org repository? Help out in the support forums? Do other things to help grow the WordPress community?
  • Variety. We’ll do our best to spread the love and choose companies that cover the gamut of WP-based businesses — themes, plugins, hosting, custom development, and any other cool things that I didn’t mention but that seem to fit the bill.

So! Cool, right? If you/your WordPress-based business are interested, just fill in the application form below. We will review applications every day and respond by the following business day.

This will be one your best opportunities to meet current and future customers, and they want to meet you, so apply now!

*See eligibility guidelines for promotion at WordCamps at plan.wordcamp.org.

Call for Volunteers

Coming to WordCamp SF and wish you could be more involved than the average attendee? Volunteers — whether you’re signing on to be responsible for a whole area of event operations or pitching in for an hour or two — are the foundation of every WordCamp, and volunteering is a great way to meet more of the community and give something back.

There are a variety of volunteer opportunities, each with different time commitments, experience requirements, and logistics. There are two requirements for ALL volunteers, regardless of the job or duration: be reliable and be friendly. 🙂

Look over the list to see if anything strikes a chord, then if you’d like to volunteer, fill out the volunteer application form to express your interest in volunteering. Our volunteer coordinator, Andrea Middleton of WordCamp Central, will get back to you by the next business day to let you know what options are available and work out a schedule (which we will post on this site for reference).

As we fill up volunteer positions, I will remove the filled positions from the list, so if there’s something specific you’d like to help with, submit the form soon!

Swag store and t-shirt station – Pre-conference prep work includes folding/rolling shirts to bring to Mission Bay. At-WCSF work includes distributing and/or selling shirts and other merchandise from swag tables in the hall, taking money and making change, using an iPad/Square reader. Retail experience helpful.

Video – We’re bringing back Joe from Blaze to man the mixing board, but need volunteers to act as camera operators at WCSF. Good gig, since you can watch sessions at the same time. Video Experience REQUIRED.

Registration – Check in registered attendees and hand out nametags. Being really awesome with alphabetical order helps here.

Happiness Bar (formerly called Genius Bar) Answer questions and help WordPress users fix problems with their sites. Must be able to show level of expertise to be selected for this gig.

Newbie Workshop – Provide as-needed 1-on-1 help to attendees who are setting up their first WordPress.com site at the same time as the rest of the class (and are confused about something). Must be very familiar with WordPress.com features. Note: this in Friday at Pier 38, not Mission Bay.

Printing – Feel like donating some paper and printer ink to the cause? Print up some programs and associated materials on plain white paper from your business or home office and drop them off at Pier 38 during prep week. Anything we can’t get covered by volunteers will be printed at Kinko’s, and we’ll need a volunteer to oversee that, too. An eye for detail is helpful.

Food/Beverage – This is already taken of for the most part, but it would be helpful to have a few people keeping an eye on things. On Saturday we’ll especially need a couple of people to help around lunchtime.

Green Room Guards – Having a safe place for speakers and volunteers to leave their stuff while they run around is important. We need people to stay in these rooms (maybe an hour or two at a time?) to guard everyone’s stuff.

Emcees – Introduce speakers/sessions and keep things running on time. Keep an eye on the clock and give speakers a heads up when they are down to 10 and 5 minutes, and let them know when their time is up. Brevity and wit a must.

Room Runners – Work with the emcees, video people, speakers, and everyone else working in the room to keep things running smoothly. Make sure there’s water for speakers, and provide support as needed for other event staff.

Casual Runners – Unexpected things always happen at events. It’s good to have a handful of people on hand to help take care of whatever crops up.

Airport Pickups – Some speakers and VIPs will be flying into SFO and need to get from the airport to a downtown hotel. While many will just take BART, for some a ride from a friendly community member would be a nicer way to begin their WCSF weekend. If you have a car and don’t mind doing an airport run or two, awesome.

Hotel Shuttle – Some speakers and VIPs will all be staying at the same downtown hotel. Drivers willing to do a run or two between the hotel and Mission Bay before and/or after the conference would be very helpful.

Miscellaneous Prep – Random helping here and there that doesn’t have a category.

So if you’d like to volunteer, fill in the form and let us know!

Andrea (the volunteer coordinator) will review applications each day to figure out when/where you’d fit best in the schedule. Expect an email or phone call from her to confirm your interest and determine when it makes sense for you to volunteer your time. Thanks!

Tees – Deadline Today

This year’s WCSF shirt is going to be so freakin’ cool I can’t even stand it. I just got the okay from [redacted] to use [redacted] but with [redacted] so it’s WordCamp-specific. I predict that there will be widespread clamoring for these shirts. If you haven’t bought your ticket yet, do it now. The last shirt order is happening today, so if you register late we likely won’t have for you! That would be so sad!

If you have already bought a ticket, please make sure you’ve filled in your registration info. That confirmation link you got when you paid for your ticket actually goes to a form where you need to fill in your name, shirt size (note: American Apparel for men and Bella for women, so order sizes accordingly), dietary restrictions, and other information we need to put you on the attendee list. If you can’t find the email with the link, send an email to support at wordcamp dot org and we can look it up and re-send it. (But check your email from the day you bought your ticket first, please and thank you.)

Newbie Workshop Sold Out!

The first-time blogger workshop we’re running on Friday, August 12 has sold out! If you want to be put on the waitlist for the Friday first-time user workshop, leave a comment on this post. If more spaces become available, we will contact people from this list.

A Few More Confirmed Speakers

Slowly but surely getting there. After this post I have about 20 more people I’m contacting, but didn’t want to make you wait until then to see who’s been confirmed since my last post. Here are the new additions!

Friday

Austin Smith – From Drupal to WordPress
Shannon Smith – Multilingual Design
John Kleinschmidt – WordPress for the Greater Good (CURE)
Greg Veen – Web Fonts for Developers

Saturday

Sara Cannon – Responsive Web Design
Aaron Jorbin – JavaScript Unit Testing (catchier title to come!)
Estelle Weyl – CSS Topic TBD

Sunday

Ryan Markel – Which WordPress Is Right for You?
Willo O’Brien – Title TBD
Pete Davies – Title TBD
Teru Kuwayama – Basetrack.org: taking WordPress to War

Jeff Veen is also confirmed, but we’re not sure yet if he’ll be speaking on Saturday or Sunday. He’ll likely talk about how to make the web more beautiful or something like that, but we’ll have his topic and day finalized by the time we publish the remaining lineup.

If you weren’t convinced about coming before, there’s still time to get your tickets!

Core Contributor Hack Day

On Thursday before WordCamp, core code contributors are invited to come to the Automattic Lounge at Pier 38 to work on patches for WordPress 3.3. Much of the core team will be there, and doors will be open from 10am – 6pm. We’ll order pizza sometime late lunchish.

If you are currently a core contributor, we’d love for you to come. If you a hardcore WordPress developer but have never contributed to core, we’d love for you to start. Between now and then, get set up with an SVN checkout on your laptop so you’ll be ready to go. If you like the idea of contributing to core but are intimidated by setting up a dev environment and using SVN, this day isn’t for you. Instead, you’ll want to attend the regular WordCamp session on getting started as a core contributor.

Note: It’s important that everyone in attendance be working on core. If you come to hang out and you work on other stuff instead of core code, that will not be cool. This is a core hack day — if you just want to hang out, wait for the regular WordCamp.

If you think you’ll come leave a comment on this post, so we’ll know how many people to expect. Thanks!

A Dozen More Speakers Announced!

I was going to do an individual post about each speaker as they were confirmed, but have decided it would be far more interesting if they introduced themselves and their sessions on their own, so keep an eye out for some blog posts and/or video introductions by our WCSF speakers in the weeks between now and the event. We’re still sending replies to people who applied to speak and selecting more, but here are the speakers/sessions that have been confirmed so far (grouped by day, but in no particular order):

Friday
Mark Jaquith – Scaling, Servers, and Deploys — Oh My!
Sara Rosso – Introduction to the WordPress Ecosystem (likely a cleverer title to come)
Barry Abrahamson – Scaling and Servers Q&A

Saturday
Nikolay Bachiyski – Unit Testing Will Change Your Life
Michael Adams – Secure IFrame Communication in a Pre-postMessage() World
Chelsea Otakan – Version Control for Designers
Andrew Nacin – Debugging in WordPress
Mark Jaquith, Jon Cave, Brad Williams – Security Showdown
Andy Skelton – Deep Voodoo: How the innermost innards of WordPress work
Daryl Koopersmith – Decisions, Not Options

Sunday
Dianne Jacobs – Killer Food Blogs
Matt Mullenweg – State of the Word/Town Hall
Hanni Ross – Top 5 Ways to Break Your Blog (and how to fix it)
Teru Kuwayama – Basetrack.org: Taking WordPress to War
Sheri Bigelow – Top 10 Features You Aren’t Using (But Should Be!)

I’ll post another batch of confirmations on Monday. Who are you most excited to see?
